THE GREEN DESERT

alt

"No one ever returns alive from New Guinea" was the often heard saying utterd by the Japanese during the war. If there ever was a Russian Front for their army in WWII then the GREEN DESERT of New Guinea was it.
From February 1942 until July 1944, a war of attrition was fought by the United States Army Air Force against the Japanese Army and Navy Air Forces over Papua, New Guinea.

This period comprises more than half the length of the war in the Pacific. The air campaign in the South Pacific was of extreme importance to the outcome of the war. Both sides had to deal with huge logistical challenges to bring the best in new weapons and technology to gain the upper hand in this struggle. 1943 proved to be the pivotal year in the struggle. The Japanese Navy introduced two new variants of the vaunted A6M Zero which was losing its dominance in the area by late 1942. The Japanese Army commited its latest verisons of the Ki-43 Hayabusa and the new Ki-61 Hein to battle to counter growing American air power.

It was New Guinea where the US Army Air Force first based its new P-38 Lightnings and P-47 Thunderbolts in force in the Pacific Theater. These aircraft had a immediate impact once operational,  backing up the battle weary P-39s and P-40s that had been holding the line since 1942. The burden of attack was on the USAAF. It was in, over and around the island of New Guinea that the Japanese Army and Navy, and their air forces, would have to first be worn down and finally destroyed for Victory in the Pacific.
