Thunder & Lightning

In July 1943 the Luftwaffe had no idea of what to face when the scramble alarm rang. They ran for there aircraft only knowing that some sort of raid was inbound. Identifying the raid usually happened minutes or seconds before the intercept. Swarms of Late Marque Spitfires, P-47s and P-38's were seen usually escorting large groups of Allied Bombers on attacks all over Western Europe. Targets In Germany were starting become more common although targets in Occupied France were still being hit on a regular basis.

The Luftwaffe usually pitted the lighter and more agile Bf 109 against the fighter escort while the more heavily armed Fw 190 and sometimes Bf 110 attacked the armadas of Flying Fortress and Liberator bombers.
