Cherryblossom: Bougainville 1943
Operation Cherryblossom: Bougainville 1943
As a part of the major Operation Cartwheel, Operation Cherryblossom was the panned attack and capture of the island of Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. This operation began on November 1, 1943. It began with the preparation of the Torokina Bay area for invasion by Marines. Once the beachhead was secured days later, the IJN hastily reinforced the area with A6M fighters from Truk to the area.
There was hard fighting on the island for a long period of time as the Japanese maintained control of the Northern Solomons and even the small island to the north of Bougainville, Buka. The months of November and December 1943 saw aerial action over the island, which this FSO attemnpts to recreate.
