MARCH 2012 SEC
FRAME 2

Neuerburg 391st BG, 9th AF, MISSION 204-
Presented March 11, 2012

FROM: “391st Bombardment Group, History W.W. II. pp. 83, 84, 87, & others…, Col. Hugh H. Walker, Col. USAF (Ret), “The living and dying are there for all to read. Also there is the privilege of being a part of history and the privilege of being alive to read it".  Dedicated to the groups (Allied AND Axis), crews, and support who my father (1st Lt J. Brice Reed, USAAF) flew with as commander of “The Bum Steer”.

“…It was not until 23 December that the weather improved sufficiently for the 391st to fly a mission…”  “Target, Neuerburg, Germany defended village and communication center, an important point to the German forces fighting for the Ardennes Bulge. 21 planes were sent. Some of these dropped 43 1,000 lb. and 128 250 lb. bombs on or near the assigned primary. Strike photos gave one flight a superior rating—the bomb pattern 200 ft N of the desired aiming point of impact on a road intersection, striking three main roads and approximately 15 buildings in the center of town. The bombardier of another flight could not pick up the primary because of snow on the ground and poor visibility, attacked a railway junction at Pronenfeld, 11 miles N of the primary, with probable hits on railway tracks there. The remaining flight had a fair rating. 4 planes were flak damaged and there were no losses or casualties. (The 391st Bombardment Group was awarded the DISTINGUISHED UNIT CITATION BY THE WAR DEPARTMENT FOR GALLANTRY IN ACTION THIS DAY. From General Order dated 24 February 1945).”

Our March SEC continues in Frame 2 with that afternoon mission…
